Adult Critical Care

The critical care units provide intensive care treatment and monitoring for adult patients who are in a critically ill or unstable condition.

The critical care unit began in the early 1970’s as a small 3 bedded ICU (Intensive Care Unit), making it one of the oldest in Pune. It has now grown into a 106 bedded unit, which includes:

  • 25 bedded ICU
  • 20 bedded ICCU (Intensive Coronary Care Unit) / Neuro ICU
  • 7 bedded HDU (High Dependency Unit)

All types of complicated cases are treated, including: sepsis, post-operative complications, toxicology emergencies, cardiac complications, trauma, burns and tropical diseases such as malaria, rickettsial fevers, leptospirosis, dengue, pneumonias and more.

A full range of invasive monitoring and ventilator support is available for the critically ill patient. Additionally, the Critical Care Unit is supported by an active and dedicated MSW (Medical Social Worker) team, influencing the quality of critical care.

Facilities Include:

  • Ultramodern HFOV (High Frequency Oscillator Ventilator)
  • Round-the-clock services include: X-rays, dialysis, EEGs, NCVs and USG
  • A state-of-the-art RO plant provides high quality and safe dialysis facilities round-the-clock
  • First centre in India, chosen to train for critical care ultrasound
  • Fully equipped isolation rooms treat severely infected / infectious patients

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

This caters to the treatment of the critically sick infants, who require ventilation (life support) and intravenous feeding. Our Level 3 Neonatal Care is equipped with 9 beds with multi-channel monitors, infusion pumps and ventilation facilities. We have facilities for high frequency ventilation, a highly sophisticated form of artificial respiration in which very sick babies are ventilated at breathing rates of up to 600 breaths per minute, which helps in managing complicated cases needing advanced care.

For infants who require close monitoring and care such as supplemental oxygen for respiratory distress or phototherapy for jaundice. This level of care includes tube feeding and also includes the care of babies recovering from illnesses or post-operative procedures.

2 isolation rooms cater for babies needing strict infection control measures, such as those suffering from severe sepsis.

When a sick child is referred for emergency management, the baby is seen and stabilized in the ER before being shifted into the unit.

Infants and their mothers are given a chance to bond together prior to discharge. We also provide mothers with guidance and help in managing their babies confidently before discharge and provide them coaching in attending to the special needs of their newborn.

All high risk babies undergo developmental follow-up for early identification of developmental problems. The infants are assessed for growth, development, vision and hearing, and fine and gross motor skills to determine if the child is developing normally. These early intervention programs for high-risk infants are backed by excellent rehabilitation support.

Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

The PICU at KEM Hospital, Pune was established in 2000, as a part of the Department of Paediatrics. Our 10 bedded PICU is a tertiary care centre that receives referrals for a variety of complex cases. The collaboration and support of many strong super specialities at KEM, such as gastroenterology, rheumatology, nephrology, endocrinology, cardiology, pulmonology, neurosurgery, neurology and infectious disease, provides us the ability to deal with a wide spectrum of cases.

We have state-of-the-art technical facilities such as piped oxygen, ventilation, monitoring and parenteral nutrition. Upgraded facilities such as multi para monitors, invasive monitoring, bedside point of care ultrasound, bedside continuous EEG, basic and advanced CRRT haemodialysis are also available.
