Transplant Services

The Transplant Surgery Unit at KEM Hospital, Pune has been offering hope to organ recipients
and their families since 1991.

Renal Transplant Programme

The Renal Unit began performing transplants from living related donors in 1991 and along with
the Ruby Hall Clinic, jointly performed the first deceased donor transplant in Pune in 1997. The
team of nephrologists, urologists, general surgeons and vascular surgeons perform all possible
renal transplants including those on highly sensitized recipients and across ABO blood group
transplants.

We are also recognised for pancreatic and kidney-pancreas transplants, which may be of
special benefit to diabetic patients who form a large majority of patients with chronic kidney
disease. The hospital has participated in organ sharing with other units since 1997 and have
been a part of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committees program since its inception in
2004. Currently our longest surviving patient has completed 29 years since receiving a renal
allograft.

Liver Transplant Programme

The Liver Transplant Program is dedicated to curing end-stage liver disease through liver
transplants. Our level of experience allows us to accept high-risk transplant candidates who
might be turned down at other centres, because of certain pre-existing comorbidities. Our
program also specializes in the use of extended-criteria deceased donors, offering transplant
candidates liver grafts that might otherwise not be available.

Transplants are performed for all indications stemming from both common and uncommon liver
disorders. Some of the most common liver disorders include:
